The Fast & Furious universe has given us nearly two decades of respectable action films. Long gone are the suped-up Japanese tuner cars, they have been replaced by super-cars, hyper-cars, military vehicles, marine craft, and aircraft. Hobbs and Shaw lives in the part of the universe with international criminal organizations. Dwayne Johnson is Hobbs and Jason Statham is Shaw. Together they must get a super virus out of Hattie, Vanessa Kirby. Idris Elba is supervillain Brixton.
There are only a few car chase scenes sprinkled throughout the film. Brixton has a magical transforming motorcycle that makes all of the chase scenes more impossible than normal. I actively chose to not let this bug me and enjoy the film, but it could be a hiccup for some.
The Fast & Furious movies have always been over the top, but they have also delivered solid action if you suspend your disbelief. That remains true with Hobbs and Shaw.
Hobbs hates Shaw and the feeling is mutual, as a result, they constantly insult each other. The lines feel ad-libbed in a good way, like a schoolyard argument. A story of love and family is interwoven, but each scene with dialog advancing this part of the plot is excruciating. The lines are so elementary that a fifth-grader could have written them. It pulled me out of the movie, but only for a short time; these scenes are short and there are only a few of them.
"Family" has always been a part of the franchise. We all remember how much it meant to Dominic Torreto in The Fast and The Furious. Hobbs returns to his homeland, Samoa, for the first time in decades. The climax of the film is wonderfully over the top. With only classic Samoan weapons Hobbs and his biological family must hold off a criminal mastermind.
If you have watched any of the last three Fast and Furious movies you know what to expect. This doesn't break new ground, but it does deliver on all that it promises. It is a good buddy cop film within an evolving cinematic universe. Watch the trailer, it tells you everything you need to know if you will enjoy this movie.
